Power generation

Although steam turbines with good thermodynamic efficiencies are optimal for large CSP fields and operating temperatures between 300°C and higher, smaller engines with different principles and advantages are in a development stage or are introduced into the market. Different expander principles with varying work volumes and piston layouts can be used as well as steam may be replaced by organic media with different phase-diagrams and evaporation energies. In some cases commercial plants are in operation using biomass or geothermal energy, however solar field integration has not yet been developed.
